Biography
Chukwuka Ekweani (born July 16, 1995), professionally known as Ckay (SEE-KAY), is a Nigerian Singer, Songwriter, and record producer formerly signed to Chocolate City Music Group. He is originally from Anambra state but grew up in the Northern part of Kaduna in Nigeria.
Early Life
The AfroPop singer started as an instrumentalist in his church after being motivated by his Dad, who plays the piano and is also a choir director in their church.
Growing up, he was passionate about making music until His friend introduced him to the Music production software, Fruity Loops. After learning how to play the piano from his Dad, He joined a band of three, made up of him and two others, before relocating to Lagos to further his musical career in 2014.
Career
The 27-year-old Afropop singer released his first song under Loopy record music, tagged it “Nkachi Turn Up,” and began working with Chocolate city in Early 2015 before it was officially merged with Loopy music in 2016. Ckay became part and pact of the chocolate city family. He dropped his promotional single titled “Bad singer Bad Producer” on October 23.
He released his first debut EP in September 2017, which he labeled “Who the fuck is Ckay.”
The EP paved the way for his hit single “Container,” which he released in March 2018 and came out hot with massive streams and Airplay and helped garner many fans in Nigeria. The song was produced by Tempoe, and the video was shot shortly after, on July 6, 2018. It was shot and directed by Myth
The EP was followed up with another Extended play which he titled “Ckay the First.” It was dropped on August 30,2019. “Love Nwantiti” off the EP generated a lot of Airplay and streams. The remix with Joeboy and Kuami Eugene was later released on February 14,2020. The song became a primary hit song in the music industry, both internationally and locally. It went viral on TikTok and earned him his first entry into the US Billboard top 100.
He released some hit singles within the years and became the first African artist to hit 20 million Spotify listeners. He had a body of work with Davido, Focalistic and Abidoza titled “Watawi,” released on June 17, 2022.
Ckay became the second African artist to ever reach 1.2 billion streams, as Burna Boy is leading with 1.4 billion streams.
The singer released his debut album, Sad Romance, on September 23, 2022.
Personal Life
Ckay is also known as “Your Boyfriend.” He’s an artist with many female fans due to his handsome look and his light skin complexion. Ckay keeps a dreadlocks hairdo.
He left the Chocolate City Music Group in 2022, signed a new record deal with Warner Music South Africa, and is also being managed by The plug Entertainment.
He resides and spends most of his time in Nigeria and South Africa, where he has both houses and cars of his own.
He is currently single, but nothing is known about his romantic lifestyle, if he has a lover or not, as he tends to keep his personal life private.
